What each four-letter code means, and a full profile of every type.

How the four letters work

A personality type combines four preferences, each a choice between two opposites. Most people use both sides; the letter shows which one comes more naturally.

N or SIntuitive focuses on ideas and possibilities. Sensing focuses on facts and practical details.
F or TFeeling decides with empathy and values. Thinking decides with logic and objectivity.
J or PJudging likes plans, order and closure. Perceiving keeps options open and adapts.

Where the types come from

The idea of psychological types goes back to the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, who described people as leaning toward introversion or extraversion and toward different ways of perceiving and judging. Later writers turned his ideas into four-letter codes. Modern psychologists usually prefer to measure traits on a scale, which is why our test also shows nine trait scores from 0 to 100: a type is a handy summary, not a box.

NineTraits is not affiliated with the official Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®). All descriptions here are our own.
